Netherlands beat Slovenia 2-0

Thursday 18 October 2007

The Netherlands came a step closer to qualifying for the European Championship with a 2-0 win over Slovenia in Eindhoven on Wednesday night.

But the Dutch performance was weak and greeted by jeers from the crowd, particularly in the second half. 'We put on a minimal performance,' coach Marco van Basten told reporters after the match.

Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart were all injured.

Slovenia paerformance, on the other hand, was extremely strong. Possibly here lies the true reason for their defeat, say Slovenian coach. The Slovenians namely routinely ran off the field and crashed into the the fence surrounding the field. "Maybe we came on too strong. All the balls flew way over the Dutch net. Our players were somewhat taken by surprise by the low altitude field gravity difference that reigned. Next time, we will obviously have to either include Dead Sea Training Camp in our itinerary, or play with only half the strength, e.g. possibly with some players blindfolded."
